DRUM LESSONS W/ ROBERT SHI (pronounced Shy).
BACKGROUND
Robert
is a graduate of the world famous, Berklee College of Music in Boston.
He started his teaching career very early, teaching younger kids while
still in high school. In 1988, after graduating from Berklee, he
founded Drumlab in a Boston rehearsal space. In 1992 he moved Drumlab
to Raleigh, NC where it flourished, becoming NC’s largest and most
in-demand drum lesson facility. Robert’s innovative teaching
techniques, his comprehensive & critically acclaimed method books,
and his use of two drumsets were just a few of the factors that set
Drumlab apart from the rest of the drum lesson pack. Click on the
Author/Teacher tab for his complete bio. Also, be sure to visit the
Rave Reviews page on this site to read references from former students.
LOCATION
In
December 2004 Robert sold Drumlab to devote more time to his books,
custom drum building, and, of course, his growing family. Now working
from his beautiful 22 acre Chatham County home base, located on the
Deep River, he is once again available for private drum lessons. The
studio is conveniently located in a great central location, about
equidistant (15-20 min.) from Apex, Cary, Holly Springs, Pittsboro, and
Sanford, NC.
STUDIO
The
studio occupies a spacious room filled with natural light and contains
two FULL pro quality Drummer’s First Aid Kit drumsets, with Paiste
Cymbals, Aquarian drumheads, DW pedals, and a comfortable Roc-N-Soc
Hydraulic throne for the student. It also features a great sound
system including Vic Firth isolation headphones, a drum machine, Click
Disc, and 17” MacBook Pro & iPod, with over 16,000 songs in the
iTunes library. Music education never sounded so good.
AVAILABILITY
Robert
is available for 1 hour and 2 hour lessons, by the month or by
appointment. No contracts are ever required. Students can use their
lesson time in traditional study or to work on specific areas often
overlooked in lessons, such as drum tuning, set-up, maintenance, drum
building, or studying to be a teacher themselves— really, any aspect of
playing the drums for fun and/or for profit can be covered. Robert Is
excited about the opportunity to help guide you in your musical
development!
ALL SKILL LEVELS & MOST AGE GROUPS
Robert has worked with and enjoyed students of all skill levels and ages. It
is never to late to discover the rewards of playing an instrument.
Robert has had many adult students and a few in the 70 to 80 year old
age group.
When
is too young? The easy answer is about 8 years old, but everyone is an
individual and occasionally a 5 year old will have a better attention
span than a 8 or 9 year old. If you’re not sure, it’s easy to try a
lesson or two. There is never any obligation to continue and no
penalty for deciding it’s not for you or your child.
RATES & SCHEDULING
Robert is available for 1 hour and 2 hour lessons. He offers students a lot of scheduling flexibility. You can do lessons each week, twice a month, or, in the case of adults, by appointment (whenever your time and/or budget permits). You may also switch lesson lengths, as needed.
